Mission Mangal, that hit theatres on Independence Day eve, has had a stunning opening box office collection. Audiences were eagerly in wait to catch this film in theatres after its poster and trailer dropped. A multi-starrer drama, Mission Mangal is based on India’s space mission to Mars, launched by the scientists of Indian Space Research Organization. Its cast members include: Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Sonakshi Sinha, Sharman Joshi, Kirti Kulhari, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen & others.
The very first look at the film’s poster, gave an impression that the story was mainly going to revolve around Akshay, and the actresses were just their as supporting cast. But filmmakers were quick to decline this and had clarified that all actors had equally important roles to play.
When Sonakshi was asked to comment on this, she replied, “Jo bikta hai, woh bikta hai” (What sells is what sells. Other female cast members also shared the same opinion as they acknowledged that Akshay is a crowd-puller.
But Vidya Balan, who is also a part of the Mission Mangal cast, is of a slightly different opinion, going by her recent interaction with Pinkvilla. She said,
“It’s not fair to say that this film ‘needs’ an Akshay Kumar. It’s great that an Akshay Kumar has done this film, despite knowing that women have equal space in it. Because normally, (male superstars) are not even willing to share equal space. But Akshay has not only acted in the film but produced it too.”
“This mission had equal contribution from men and women. It’s great that a woman’s contribution is at least being acknowledged.”
Meanwhile fans have been very appreciative of the movie, and netizens are raving about it on social media platforms. The film made a 28.5 crores approx. on the premiere day itself. This is important as movie had to face competition with John Abraham’s: Batla House, which also premiered on 15th August.
