When Sushmita Sen Refused to Lip-sync Suggestive Lyrics

Miss Universe 1994, Sushmita Sen, recently made a roaring comeback to the industry with TV series Aarya that premiered on Amazon Prime Video. But Sushmita’s fans still remember her groovy moves as she danced on hit track Mehboob Mere in Hrithik Roshan and Karisma Kapoor starrer Bollywood Flick: Fiza.

There is something that didn’t get much highlight in the news, that while the work on the movie was going on Sushmita refused to lip-sync the song because of its suggestive lyrics. In a recent media interview, choreographer Ganesh Acharya narrating the whole incident revealed,

“There was a line that went ‘aa garmi le mere seene se (come feel the heat of my bosom)’ and she refused to sing it. She said, ‘I won’t just do it’, which made composer Anu Malik change words to ‘aa narmi le mere aankhon se (bask in the softness of my eyes)”.

This renowned Bollywood choreographer further added,

“It was unheard of at that point of time, to command and extract that kind of respect. She dominated the screen. I knew that from the first time I choreographed her for a stage performance, and unlike what we did with most actors, we let her dance alone on the stage to Sting’s Desert Rose. It’s a gamble on a massive stage like that, but I knew Sushmita could hold the stage down all by herself.”

Showering praises on Sushmita, Ganesh said that she is unusual.

“But then, there is nothing usual about her. A lot of the dancing, especially the belly dancing moves, she did herself. There’s a trance-like feel to her dancing and in those sequences, I did not do anything. It was mostly her.”

Sushmita came out of her sabbatical after a very long period. And Arya is her debut TV show. Till date only two Indians have been crowned Miss Universe. Lara Dutta was the last Indian to be crowned Miss Universe back in Year 2000.
