It’s been thirteen years since Sonam Kapoor Ahuja made her Bollywood debut with Saawariya which was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In the movie she was paired opposite Ranbir Kapoor which also starred Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji in pivotal roles. Now that Sonam has clocked 13 years in Bollywood, we came across a video of hers recalling her tenure with Bhansali as an assistant director & how she didn’t tell him that she is Anil Kapoor’s daughter.

Sonam told ETC Bollywood

“The first day I went to his (Sanjay) office to meet him, I was sitting at a table. He just came back from church and he looked at me and he is like, ‘You have come for acting? Are you here for an audition?’ I said, ‘No, sir, I have come to be an assistant.’ He said, ‘But you should act, haan.’ I said okay.”

She further shared that:

“When he found out who my father was and he got very upset. He was like, ‘Are you allowed…?’ I was 17 years old and bohot jhooth-voot bol ke (after lying a lot) I was there. But I got it on my own.”

Sonam K Ahuja also revealed that her mom said a firm ‘no’ when Sonam told her she wanted to assist Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Whereas Anil Kapoor was skeptical as he didn’t know Bhansali well. She further shared that she told them she will be assisting him with Ranbir Kapoor which convinced them eventually. Sonam & Ranbir reunited on the big screen after a decade with the 2018 film Sanju.

Recently, in an Instagram post, Sonam shared her first ever cover shoot for Vogue India from the sets of the film Saawariya. She expressed her gratitude to fans & directors who believed in her. The picture also featured her co-star from the film, Ranbir Kapoor.
