Salman Khan is the messiah of Bollywood, so to say, at least for the people he knows and cares about. He launches star kids whom he believes have potential; he collaborates with people who have asked him for some kind of favor or work, and that is not news to us. But what is, is the fact that this time, he has promised to help veteran Bollywood choreographer, the strict masterji, Saroj Khan.
She is one of the most loved choreographers in the industry who has given us memorable and amazing Bollywood dance songs. She is known to have made Bollywood biggies dance to her steps like Aishwarya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, and many others but lately, she has been going through a bit of a rough patch in her life when it comes to her career in Bollywood.
Apparently, she has been roped in by Salman Khan to choreograph him in his upcoming action drama film, Dabangg 3. Upon their meeting, she honestly told him about not getting many offers and that’s when the former extended his hand for support. She told MidDay,
“When we met, Salman asked me what I was doing nowadays. So I told him honestly that I don’t have any work (film offers) and that I am teaching Indian classical dance to young actresses. Upon hearing that, he said, ‘Now, you will work with me’. I know he is a man of his word, so he will keep his promise,”
She further disclosed how she, for some time, had lost interest in continuing as a choreographer in Bollywood but looking at the plight of dance, she thought of returning. She was quoted as saying in a previous interview with Mumbai Mirror,
“For a while I had lost interest but now looking at the haalat of dance, I want to do something good for the industry. I can’t judge actresses because I have only seen them in songs choreographed by others. Katrina looks good and there was a chance of collaborating on Thugs of Hindostan. But as the shoot was coming up, she told the makers she wouldn’t do the song without rehearsals and I was summarily replaced with Prabhudheva,”
Saroj Khan recently also talked about one of her upcoming songs which she choreographed for Madhuri Dixit. The song is from the movie Kalank slated to open to theatres on April 17. She shared the good news to her fans and in turn, she ended up spilling a little climax scene from the movie which definitely the makers did not want. Talking about less of her presence in Bollywood songs, Khan told Mumbai Mirror,
“There are all kinds of rumours doing the rounds. Some say I’m unwell, others insist I have retired. I’m waiting for Karan Johar’s Kalank to release and dispel such idle talk.”
She had last choreographed Madhuri in Gulaab Gang and now after four years, she has done it again in Kalank. Sharing this news, she added,
“Four years after Gulaab Gang, I’ve choreographed another song for Madhuri. All through the film (Kalank) she makes others dance and never dances herself, then, in the climax, when Varun’s (Dhawan) Zafar enters the kotha, she breaks into a mujra.
Well, after revealing the little climax detail, she also revealed the name and tone of the upcoming song from the movie. She was quoted as saying,
“Tabahi is a sad, situational song with fast-paced beats. Madhuri and I danced our hearts out and I’m hopeful that after seeing it, people will remember Saroj Khan again.”
She has been working in Bollywood since 1983 and also received the first National Award for Best Choreography. When she was asked about the new age Bollywood songs, she said that in her opinion, the songs have “hit an all-time low”. She further added,
“After just reading about it, Kangana Ranaut with whom I had worked in Tanu Weds Manu earlier, called me to do a song, Rajaji, in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Bollywood songs have hit an all time low. None of the songs today are memorable and you can’t differentiate between heroines, who look and dress the same.”
Even though she may have choreographed a couple of songs in the recent past, it does not do justice to the calibre she helms and that’s why maybe Salman Khan would have stepped in. Saroj Khan had previously choreographed the Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo actor in movies like Andaz Apna Apna, Biwi Ho Toh Aisi, and several others. In fact, it is said that the two also had a sort of fallout during the sets of Andaz Apna Apna when Salman thought Saroj Khan was favoring Aamir over him because he is a better dancer.
But the two have left all in the past now, for all of it now seems pretty immature to hold on to. Saroj Khan had also once told that they no longer are in bad terms as Salman also met with her grandson who is his big fan and that was a good gesture on his part.
Saroj Khan became a household name with her regular appearances on TV dance reality show, Nach Baliye and then Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa as a judge several years ago. Now, it is for us to see how and which song would he choreograph for Salman in Dabangg 3.
