Sanjay Dutt has lived a controversial life. Every now and then, he has made it to the headlines. He has been quite open about his habits and addictions since the very beginning and maybe that’s why he fronted the newspapers back then. Being accused of being a traitor, a terrorist, served jail time, mostly surrounded in negative publicity, he has seen and borne it all. In spite of bearing all of that, one of the hardest things he has had to deal with is his mother, Nargis Dutt’s death.
He has time and again mentioned his eternal love for his mother and how deeply it has left a void in his life but all of it became more prominent when it came live on screen with Sanju which released earlier this year, a biopic on Sanjay Dutt’s life.
Nargis Dutt died of Pancreatic Cancer in 1981 at the age of just 51. And when she was in the hospital, living her last days, she apparently recorded a message for her son whom she loved dearly. In the movie, they chose to not play the original Nargis Dutt’s recorded tape for a movie scene and recorded another one, keeping the emotion intact but now, we’ve got our hands on the audio recording. She says,
“More than anything Sanju, keep your humility, keep your character. Never show off. Always be humble and always respect the elders. That is the thing that is going to take you far and that is going to give you strength in your work.”
It was her dream to see her son on the big screen but destiny had other plans for she died a few days before Sanjay Dutt’s debut movie, Rocky’s premiere. Later, in an interview, Sanjay Dutt revealed,
“When my mother died I did not cry, I had not emotions I had nothing and it was after two years where I was sitting in the group and all of a suddenly this guy started playing the tape. And I heard my mother, my mother’s voice, you know, when she was in the hospital in New York, advising me and telling me things and how much she loved me and cared about me.”
“How much she expected from me and I think after two years I just burst out and I cried and I cried and I cried for good 4-5 hours. I mean all that thing that was inside of me I just took it out and once that happened, I was a changed human being, you know.”
Manisha Koirala played Nargis in the movie, Sanju and the song ‘Kar Har Maidan Fateh’ pretty much explains how strong significance and a motivational factor she played in his life. You can hear the original recording by clicking on the link mentioned below:
Sanju starring Ranbir Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Paresh Rawal, Vicky Kaushal, and Dia Mirza was a huge Bollywood hit and it released on 29 June 2018. The official IMDb summary of the movie reads:
“Sanju is a biopic of the controversial life of actor Sanjay Dutt, his film career, jail sentence and personal life. Few lives in our times are as dramatic and enigmatic as the saga of Sanjay Dutt.”
