Anurag Kashyap’s recent film, Manmarziyaan has been receiving a great response from the audiences and the critics and has won the hearts of many Bollywood fans with its touching story. Well, this successful film also had to face many problems because of the Sikh community’s objection to Abhishek Bachchan’s smoking scene shown in the film. After all this, the producers of the film went to the Central Board of Film for the deletion of the smoking scenes which have hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. Now, these scenes have been deleted from this film and also the filmmakers have apologized for showing these scenes and unintentionally hurting the sentiments of the Sikh community.
According to the reports, three scenes have been deleted which include a 29 seconds smoking scene of Abhishek Bachchan, one minute scene which shows Abhishek Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu entering the gurudwara and an 11 seconds scene where Taapsee Pannu is shown smoking. A source from production house told PTI,
“We have removed the three scenes from the film as people’s sentiments were getting hurt. The said changes have come into effect in metros from today and will reflect across India from the coming Thursday-Friday.”
Director of the movie, Anurag Kashyap also shared his viewpoint addressing the controversy and said that he never had any intention to hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. He also said that this matter should not be politicized unnecessarily. Anurag Kashyap also revealed that they took proper care while shooting and they also took guidance from the Sikh community to avoid any such situation. He stated,
“We asked for guidance from Sikh people for the film. When we shot the sequence in Gurudwara, we were told we can’t shoot them getting married as it can’t be faked so we made the actors do only ‘Mattha tekna’.”
Anurag Kashyap also stated that during the shot of smoking scene which was being shot on a street, they were close to 150 people and they even asked them if they are doing it the right way or not. He said that they were told that Abhishek Bachchan will have to remove his turban before shooting this scene and they also did it, He also stated that they were shown how Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan) will hand over his turban with both the hands before shooting this scene.
Anurag Kashyap said,
“When we shot the smoking scene, it was shot on the street and there were close to 150 people watching the shoot. We asked before doing the scene and were told that he has to take the Turban off before he smokes away from his house. We were also shown how Robbie (Abhishek) should take the turban off with both hands and how he should hand it over and how the cousin should take it. It was never the intention to hurt the community and why would we do that when we got so much love from them.”
Anurag Kashyap apologized for showing this scene in the film and stated that it wasn’t his intention to hurt the Sikh community. He said that he is really sorry if the scenes in his latest film ‘Manmarziyaan’ have genuinely hurt the sentiments of anyone. He said,
“To those whose hurt is genuine, I offer a genuine apology, that wasn’t my intention. And for those who are doing it for attention, I am glad you have got the attention”
Not only Anurag Kashyap but also Taapsee Pannu opened up on this controversy. Taapsee Pannu feels this edit will assure that no Sikh will ever smoke and no woman will ever think of another man while getting married in a Gurudwara. She took over her Twitter handle and stated,
“I am sure this edit will assure that no Sikh will ever Smoke and no woman will ever think about ANYONE else while getting married in a Gurudwara. THIS surely will make Waheguru proud and assures that MY religion is the purest, most righteous and peaceful ! #Proud.”
