But one of the few aspects that have a lasting impression on the audience is the spooky transformation of the lead actors for these scary flicks, who have managed to scare the audience with their performance. Our leading ladies don’t fail to impress in this department and have given some memorable characters and moments that can give the audience nightmares. Here is a list of five horror movies and the characters that can keep you awake for nights giving you a spine-chilling, heart-leaping scary experience.

Anushka Sharma – Pari

Anushka Sharma has portrayed different characters throughout her acting career and has cemented her position as a versatile actress in Bollywood. Anushka who starred in the horror movie ‘Pari’, received a lot of appreciation from the audience and critics for her portrayal of paranormal character Rukhsana. For her character in the movie, Anushka Sharma sported a bruised and battered look and essayed the part of a tortured and abandoned woman convincingly.

Vidya Balan – Bhool Bhulaiya

Vidya Balan took the audience by surprise when her character changed from the docile Avni to Manjulika on-screen. She effortlessly portrayed the role of a woman haunted by a ghost in the movie by getting into the skin of the character.  Her on-screen character, Avni was shown to be suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder, an illness that affects the person’s identity, making them think they are someone else.

Bipasha Basu– Alone

A besotted wife, an over-busy husband, and a dark secret that is kept bundled up. Set in Kerala against the backdrop of a scenic and sprawling house on the banks of the backwaters, Alone is known for its gripping storyline and some spooky moments. Bipasha Basu played the double role of conjoined twins – Sanjana and Anjana. The film depicts a realistic love story and portrays the various aspects of two individuals in a relationship.

Konkona Sen Sharma – Ek Thi Daayan

Considered as one of the most unusual horror films in Bollywood, ‘Ek Thi Daayan’ marked the actress’ maiden tryst with the genre. Konkana plays the role of Bobo’s stepmother; a ‘Daayan’ who wrecked their home.

Anushka Shetty – Bhaagamathie

The highlight of the movie is Anushka’s portrayal of two distinct characters – the charming IAS officer Chanchala caught in a political game and the ferocious, majestic – Bhaagamathie that mesmerizes the audiences. The movie is a trilingual directed by the talented G. Ashok and boasts of a stellar star-cast including Anushka Shetty, Murali Sharma, Prabhas Sreenu, Unni Mukundan, Jayaram and Asha Sarath and will premiere on Sunday, 1st July at 9 pm only on Zee Cinema.
