Top 10 Kannada Movies of 2017 Ranked

2017 was a good year for the Kannada film industry; they saw many good movies and lot of box office records were broken. Sudeep, Punit Rajkumar, and other superstars had good films under their belt while there were many newcomers who gave good performances and entertained the audience with a variety of genres. Let us have a look at the top 10 Kannada movies for 2017.

1) Mugulu Nage

Starring Ganesh and Apoorva Arora, this movie is about heartbreak and the director-actor combination has worked perfectly to give us a movie with the exquisite taste of Kannada film industry. This is the third joint venture by Director Yogaraj and Actor Ganesh. The movie was also co-produced by Ganesh and Yogaraj.

2) Ondu Motteya Kathe

This Kannada language romantic comedy was named ‘Kannada film of the year’ by The Hindu.  Starring Raj B Shetty and Usha Bhandari, movie received positive reviews from most critics in the industry. The movie made us realize some beautiful aspects of life and uses subtle comedy with good references and plot wrapped in an easy to guess manner. Ondu Motteya Kathe is a must watch the movie for fans of the romantic comedy genre.

3) Rajkumar

A gem of a movie by Puneet Rajkumar which had an ensemble cast of Priya Anand, Prakash Raj, Chikkanna, Avinash and Sarath Kumar.

This was the highest grossing movie in the Kannada film industry beating Mungaru Male making more than 75 crores worldwide with a budget of 25 crores.

4) Hebbuli

Starring Sudeep and Amala Paul in the lead roles, Hebbuli had the largest release in Kannada cinema worldwide with 500 screens. Sudeep plays Captain Ram, who investigates the murder of his brother who is an IAS officer. This movie also marked the debut of actress Amala Paul in Kannada movies. The movie was directed by S. Krishna and this is his second venture with Sudeep in the lead role after the movie ‘Maanikya’.

5) Mana Manthana

This movie by Suresh Hebalikar gave us a breath of fresh air in 2017 in the Kannada movie industry. It deals with suicide and depression two of the biggest issues which are unaddressed in the society currently and also gives us life lessons on how to be a parent and how to encourage children and their dreams all the while giving us a good family entertainer. Kiran Rajput and Arpitha in lead roles do complete justice to the expectations of the director.

6) Chowka

The movie starring an ensemble cast of Prem Kumar, Vijay Raghunathan, Dignath, Priyamani and Bhavana is an action drama film which had five different plot lines happening in different time periods from 1986 to 2017. The film has a happy but tragic end and is reported to be remade in four other languages.

7) Pushpaka Vimana 

Pushpaka Vimana marked the 100th  movie of Ramesh Aravind where he portrayed the father and the role of his daughter was done by Baby Yuvina Parthavi. The movie was reported to be sent to the Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay although it did not make into any of the lists. Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla was part of the movie in a song sequence. The movie name was adapted from a Tamil silent movie by Kamal Haasan in 1987.

8) Chamak

Another romantic comedy film starring Ganesh and Rashmika Mandhana directed by Suni and produced by T.R Chandrashekhar. Ganesh plays the role of a gynaecologist and the movie marks the first combination of Ganesh and Suni as the director-actor combo.

9) Railway Children

This film is worth your time if you like the drama genre and is inspired by Rescuing railway children by Lalitha Iyer and Malcolm Harper. This film won many awards and accolades and was produced through crowdfunding. The plot revolves around a 12-year-old who somehow gets into a gang of illegal businesses from roaming around in the railway station.

10) Mufti

It is a neo-noir action thriller film and since 2015 many films in Sandalwood have been of this genre. The film received a positive reception from the audience and performed well at the box office.
