There were some reports that suggested that Karan Johar’s next production, Kalank is loosely inspired by ‘What The Body Remembers’, written by author Shauna Singh Baldwin. But the actors of the film have something else to say. Varun Dhawan was speaking at an event of Ishq 104.8 FM and he said that he believes the film’s premise is not similar to the book. Though after the trailer of the film was released, some netizens didn’t take much time to point out the similarities between the two, which records the story of love and loss with partition as a backdrop, Varun Dhawan denies the rumors.
Both the book and film portrays the story about two women who get married to the same man named Dev Chaudhary in the movie (played by Aditya Roy Kapur). Also, the names of the characters played by Alia Bhatt (Roop) and Sonakshi Sinha (Satya) in the film are also similar to the book.
When Varun was questioned about the similarities of the film’s plot with the book, Varun told the reporters,
“I have not read that book, I have no knowledge about that. But I don’t think the premise is the same because our actual premise has not yet opened in the promos. Yes, there is a love story but the film is a lot more than that.”
The actor also added to his statement there are several layers to the story which will be revealed only when the film releases.
“Once people watch it they can make up their mind about that. But as far as I know, Karan had this story for a very long time which he wanted me to do.”
The October star also believes that having the same names of the characters could be a case of coincidence,
“I don’t know about the character names, it could be a coincidence. No one will be that stupid, that even if one had to copy, they would change names, why would the names be retained?”
Also, when the reports asked Varun about leading ‘Stree 2’, which originally starred Rajkumar Rao, he took no time to deny the rumor and said,
“No, it’s false.”
Talking about the film, Kalank is a period drama set in 1945 in the pre-independence British era. The film features an ensemble cast including Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur. The film is scheduled to release on 17th April 2019.
