Who knew that the cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul’s casual statements on Koffee With Karan would put them into the pit of troubles. Hardik Pandya made some sexist and racist comments on the show, which he wasn’t allowed. On one hand, where the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) has suspended the two players from the ODI series in Australia on the grounds of misconduct, on the other hand, the brands that had contracted with Hardik Pandya has also been suspended.
A source said,
“A leading men’s personal grooming brand has suspended its contract with Hardik after the controversial episode. Its loss has cost the all-rounded approximately Rs 2 crore.”
The source added,
“His brand value has taken a huge hit with most of the other companies, who were queuing up to sign him up, disappearing in quick succession. He is currently the face for six other brands and many of them are contemplating similar action.”
Rahul’s suffering is no different. One of the sources claimed,
“He had signed a three-year contract with a sports brand and the company is already considering a replacement for him.”
Many cricketers spoke about the issue and expressed their anger, in an interview with India Today, Harbhajan Singh had lashed out on their comments,
“Look the punishment could be a two-match or three-match ban. That will not change anything. Their reputation was at stake, they have lost the trust of their teammates. If he comes and stands next to you at a party, would you like to stand next to him? I will not travel by these two guys on the same bus because of my daughter if my wife is traveling in the team bus.. how would they feel? You are looking at women in only one angle? That’s not right.”
Whereas, former Indian pacer S Sreesanth spoke to an ANI reporter and said,
“What happened was wrong. They (Pandya and Rahul) said some wrong things. But there are others who have made bigger mistakes than these but are still playing. They are in different fields and not only in cricket.”
Hardik Pandya and Rahul are currently suspended from the ODI series in Australia and the duo has been replaced by Tamil Nadu’s Vijay Shankar and Shubham Gill in the team. The episode that aired on 6th January was taken down from all the platforms by the channel and the recent episode of Koffee with Karan that features the sibling duo, Shahid Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, also had a disclaimer, apologizing for the cricketers’ statements.
While Hardik Pandya made many controversial and personal statements on the show, KL Rahul was kept it in a sophisticated manner and chose his words carefully while replying to Karan Johar’s questions. Hardik Pandya literally bragged about hooking up with multiple women and even spoke about his relationship with his parents.
