Movies come and go. Some release, garner appreciation and leave. Some leave an impact and some set unspeakable trends. No matter you agree or not, but Bollywood in India has a big role to play. It is more than just a source of entertainment. Here, Bollywood movies have the power to be the biggest trendsetters and influence the audience. The fact that celebrity endorsements can make a meagre product sell is because we follow celebrities and their likes and dislikes. Where we usually get to see the same story being done over and over again, there have also been many Bollywood movies which have set trends in their own way, broke the set rules for good and also succeeded in making way to the audience’s hearts. So, let’s have a look at 10 Bollywood movies which have been the biggest trendsetters; here especially in India.
Sholay had to top the list. The must hardly be anyone who hasn’t seen or heard of the movie. It was a cult back then and stands to be a classic even today and forever. Jai and Veeru together were unbeatable and so was Salim Javed’s writing at that point in time because of whom this movie became such a super hit. Action, comedy, romance, drama, tragedy; all wrapped up in this 1975 classic, can’t praise the film enough!
2. Rang De Basanti
Now, this is another Bollywood gem where the direction and storytelling of the movie is king and the acting is the crown. Both together came out to be so powerful that the movie stands to be in the league of some of the best movies Bollywood made to date. It broke the conventional way of filmmaking and came out to be shining.
Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion was a deep insight into the modelling industry and the minds of the models. Staying true to the plight of the models in the country, Priyanka and Kangana portray their characters with utmost honesty and finesse. The movie was a pleasant change for the viewers who were long waiting to see something different than the old action and new run-off-the-mills.
4. Taare Zameen Par
Taare Zameen Par is one movie which has made everyone cry. Aamir Khan in an empathetic teacher’s role and Darsheel Safari in a Dyslexic Student’s role fit very well. Every piece of the film was connected so beautifully that nothing seemed overtly emotional or forced. The movie, for sure, made mothers a little more lenient towards their young sons and father more understanding of their children. The message was loud and clear and everyone definitely heard it.
5. English Vinglish
Now, this movie brought about a different wave altogether. From us Indians, worshipping English to us, being a little more considerate towards those who do not know the language, the movie walked a long path. A mother who doesn’t know English cannot be just reduced to someone who is illiterate is what the movie told us and it was long overdue. Gauri Shinde and Sridevi made a good team together and even a better movie together which went on to inspire millions.
6. The Dirty Picture
Vidya Balan has been breaking stereotypes ever since she’s got in the industry. Her movie choices speak about that more than anything else. And The Dirty Picture took it to another level. The controversial life of ‘Silk’ was portrayed with such honesty that one could see through the character’s depth. It made the audience more open towards different stories of people who have lived life differently and faced different circumstances than what can be put in the bracket of normal.
7. Wake Up Sid
Ranbir Kapoor can do any role with the same intensity and passion. Whatever role he plays, he makes you feel that, that is how he is in his normal life; this is his power on-screen. And this is what he established with Wake Up Sid. Our generation loves the movie because it is relatable and the character is easy to connect to.
This courtroom drama by Taapsee Pannu, Angad Bedi and Amitabh Bachchan among others chose to speak about the rampant molestation of women in the country. The movie did make an impact and started a series of other movies talking about such issues, not in hushed tones but loudly. It based on the fact that nowhere a woman is wrong when she is assaulted and her conduct, her clothes or any other thing should not be in question but only the man’s character who chose to inflict pain.
9. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has the perfect friend squad. It is “friendship goals”. It has an inhibited nerd, an over-ambitious man, a confused drunkard and tomboyish girl who crushes on her best friend. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has everything you can expect a solid rom-com to have. It is probably a coming-of-age film which tapped on the Millennials’ point of view; especially Indian. Every other person who has seen the movie knows that it is all heart and to some extent has been a trendsetter in its own way for it makes one realise that it is okay to be different.
10. Dil Chahta Hai
Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai was probably one of the first friendship films for our generation to look forward to. Three buddies, one road trip. Only this was enough to get this movie sold but the movie has to offer a lot more. The movie is about three varying personalities having fun and at the same time trying to figure out their life, their future. It made Goa famous and road trips, fancy! Definitely, a trendsetter!
