The election fever is high in the country. A few days ago, several Bollywood celebs were seen coming out of polling booths, after they had cast their votes. Among those was one of the fan favorites missing, Akshay Kumar. Akshay Kumar holds Canadian citizenship, due to which his absence from Elections often becomes a topic for concern.
A couple weeks ago, Akshay Kumar took PM Narendra Modi’s ‘not so political’ interview which many saw as his political involvement. It is after this interview that the speculations about his citizenship again raised. With respect to this, Akshay, clearing the air, put out an official statement in order to keep the negative controversies away. He took to Twitter and posted:
Read the whole post here:
“I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years.”
“I work in India, and pay all my taxes in India. While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequence to others.”
“I would like to continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger.”
Though, with this statement, he made things pretty clear calling unnecessary media intervention into his personal matters an ‘unwarranted interest’, the Twitterati did not seem to have been impressed with this. The Twitterati trolled Kumar. Here are some of the tweets, have a look:
RM @twitmenon: “Then you should focus on your work like other foreign actors in India & not become poster boy for a fundamentalist political party & dance to the loony tunes of its leaders. If you can’t vote in India then why indulge in its politics.” [sic]
Sanjay Khanna @khannasanjay: “You have problem when somebody asks about your citizenship. Can you tell how others feel when told to prove their patriotism. It’s even more difficult. Have you ever spoken against that? At least speak now. Non Political? You are good at comedy.” [sic]
[sic]
Andrew Mohan Charles @andrewmohanc: “#AkshayKumar if I were from #Canada I would be asking the government to keep a close watch on you as a #Nazi.” [sic]
Well, the netizens seem a bit too harsh on the man, as he has never hidden his citizenship status. In a 2017 interview to Times Now, he had said,
“About the Canadian thing, I am an honorary citizen. I’ve been given an honorary thing. I think it’s a thing that people should be proud about. I have an honorary doctorate also but I am not a Doctor. So this is what people have to understand.”
