1. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani
Shah Rukh Khan Starrer, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, talks about two reporters from rival channels. Very brilliantly, it draws our attention towards the corrupted system and how media channels manipulate us at every stage.
2. No One Killed Jessica
Rani Mukherjee starrer, No One Killed Jessica, is a serious movie based on the high profile Jessica Lal murder case and how Jessica’s sister seeks justice with the help of a journalist. Together they challenge the system and make sure the real culprit is proven guilty.
Movies like Lakshya shows us how difficult it is to be a journalist. This movie is not just about how Hrithik finds meaning to his life but also about Preity Zinda’s character, who is a journalist, and how hard it was for her to cover the Kargil War. Her role was inspired by top journalist Barkha Dutt who had covered the Kargil war with bravery.
4. Madras Café
Shoojit Sircar’s Madras café is an exceptionally well written and directed movie. The story is about the Sri Lankan Civil war in the late 80s and early 90s. It revolves around the conspiracy behind the assassination of the ex-prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi. A war correspondent played by Nargis helps the soldier (John) to untangle the plot that was supposed to kill ex-PM.
Nayak is another masterpiece that should be on your watch list. The movie revolves around a journalist who happens to question the CM of Maharashtra in an interview. The CM, out of rage, offers him to become the CM for a day. And the reporter accepts the offer without hesitation. Things change when he becomes the CM for a day, and he witnesses the corrupted system.
6. Page 3
Madhur Bhandarkar’s movie, Page 3, is an underrated gem. Konkana’s character as Page 3 journalist discovers the dark side of glamour and also makes the viewers release that there is more to the city than Page 3 content.
